The reading of the Declaration of Independence that New York celebrates each Fourth of July has a local backstory: when a copy reached the city on July 9, 1776, and was read aloud to General Washington’s troops on the Common near today’s City Hall, a crowd surged down Broadway and toppled the gilded lead statue of King George III at Bowling Green. Much of that lead was later melted into musket balls for the Continental Army. This is Guide № 002 in The Love New York Guide series.
