The reading of the Declaration of Independence that New York celebrates each Fourth of July has a local backstory: when a copy reached the city on July 9, 1776, and was read aloud to General Washington’s troops on the Common near today’s City Hall, a crowd surged down Broadway and toppled the gilded lead statue of King George III at Bowling Green.
