Snug Harbor Staten Island is the easiest big escape from Manhattan. You ride a free ferry, hop on a short bus, and walk into a culture park with museums, gardens, public art and wetlands. Most visitors never go. This guide shows you how to plan the trip in half a day.

Snug Harbor Cultural Center & Botanical Garden calls itself “a culture park in Staten Island where arts, nature, education, and history unite.” That description fits. You can spend the morning in a gallery and the afternoon among garden beds, with no need to rush between boroughs.
What Snug Harbor Staten Island Is
Snug Harbor sits on the north shore of Staten Island, at 1000 Richmond Terrace. It is not a single museum. It is a campus, and you move between its parts on foot.
The official site groups the campus into museums and galleries on one side and outdoor spaces on the other. That split helps you plan. You can pick the indoor stops you want, then fill the gaps with the grounds.
The outdoor grounds are free
Snug Harbor says its outdoor grounds and gardens are free of charge to the public. You need no ticket and no advance registration to walk the grounds. The grounds are open seven days a week, dawn to dusk, and hours are shorter from October to March.
That makes it a strong pick for a budget day. Our guide to free things to do in New York City covers more no-cost ideas across the five boroughs.
Check access before you go
Special events can limit access. The Snug Harbor site notes limited access to the grounds and gardens from November 6 to 18, because crews are installing the Winter Lantern Festival. The festival is a ticketed event. We checked this in November 2026. Always read the official site on the day you plan to visit.
How to Get to Snug Harbor from Manhattan
The trip is part of the fun. You start with the ferry and finish with a short ride on a local bus.
Step 1: Take the Staten Island Ferry
The ferry leaves from Lower Manhattan and crosses New York Harbor to the St. George Terminal. Our Staten Island Ferry guide explains how to ride it. You can also check the official ferry site for schedules. Stand on the outer deck for the skyline and the Statue of Liberty.
Step 2: Board a bus at Ramp D
At St. George, board a bus at Ramp D. Snug Harbor lists a ride of about 10 minutes. The right route depends on which gate you want.
The S40 takes you to the North Gate. Get off at the Sailor’s Snug Harbor Gate stop on Richmond Terrace. The S40 also serves the West Gate. For that one, get off at the Snug Harbor Road East or Snug Harbor Road West stop.
The S44 reaches the East Gate and the South Gate. For the East Gate, get off at Lafayette Ave and Fillmore Street. For the South Gate, get off at Henderson Ave and Westbury Ave.
Driving and parking
On-site parking is free and first come, first served, according to Snug Harbor. The lots are numbered P1 through P4. On busy summer weekends they fill fast, so the site suggests public transit or parking off site. After dark, all gates lock except the West Gate on Snug Harbor Road.

What to See at Snug Harbor
The campus lists these attractions on its official site. Each one has its own character, so mix and match.
Chinese Scholar’s Garden
The Chinese Scholar’s Garden sits under the outdoor exploration part of the campus. It is the most photographed spot, and it rewards a slow walk. Plan time to sit and look rather than tick it off.
Newhouse Center for Contemporary Art
The Newhouse Center for Contemporary Art is the gallery side of the campus. It suits a rainy hour or a cold afternoon. Check the official site for the current exhibition.
Staten Island Museum
The Staten Island Museum has a home on the campus. If you like local history and natural history, put it on your list. Compare it with the big Manhattan options in our guide to the best museums in New York City.
Noble Maritime Collection
The Noble Maritime Collection fits the waterfront setting. It gives the harbor story a quiet, small-scale home. Visit its official site for opening details.
Staten Island Children’s Museum
The Staten Island Children’s Museum makes Snug Harbor a good family day. Younger kids can burn off energy there, then run across the lawns outside.
Public art, gardens, Heritage Farm and wetlands
Snug Harbor lists free outdoor public art installations. It also lists public gardens, a Heritage Farm and wetlands. You can see all of these on a grounds-only visit. They also give you a gentle walk after a ferry ride and a bus trip.
The campus also lists the Art Lab and a World Trade Center Educational Tribute. It offers classes, family programs and tours too. Browse the official site to match them to your dates.
Plan Your Half-Day Visit
A relaxed half day works well. It also pairs neatly with other Staten Island stops, which we cover in our things to do on Staten Island guide and our Staten Island hidden gems list.
A simple schedule
Take the ferry in the morning and ride the bus from Ramp D. Walk the grounds first, because the light is best outdoors and the gates close at dusk. Visit one or two indoor venues next. Finish with a slow loop through the gardens, then head back to St. George.
Tips for a smoother trip
Wear comfortable shoes, because the campus is large. Bring water. Check each venue’s own hours, since the grounds and the museums keep separate schedules. Winter hours end earlier, so start your day early between October and March.
If you already plan a harbor day, add the ferry views to a trip that includes the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island. The free ferry gives you a distant look at the statue on the way across.
